Today is September 10th, 2014. There is a specific form of internet protest going on today called Internet Slowdown Day. At issue is something called Net Neutrality. I usually just stick to pictures and don’t write, but here is my version of how Net Neutrality affects us all.
This is how you see my pictures today.
- I make these pictures.
- I upload my picture files to a server on the internet.
- You pay to access the internet and you can see my pictures.
The companies that supply only your local connection to the internet would like to change that. In addition to what you pay for internet access… they would like to charge me to deliver my pictures to you.
- I make these pictures.
- I upload the picture files to a server on the internet.
- I PAY to appear on the local connections of Verizon, ATT, Comcast, Time Warner….
- You pay to access the internet and can see my pictures.
If I don’t pay… those companies might decide that my pictures aren’t worth much to me or you. My pictures get put in the slow lane. They could set the delay to anything that they want. Maybe if you start downloading them on Sept. 10th you’ll be able to see them in 2015.
2015?!
Again, your local internet connection (Comcast, Verizon, ATT, Time-Warner, Charter) could set the delay to anything that they want. Start today… see you in 2015!
